For mat or Reformer Pilates, start with clothes you feel comfortable wearing. Small details often make the difference: a fastening at the back, a waistband that folds over or a top you keep adjusting. Here is what to check when trying on your outfit and what to ask the studio.
Mat or Reformer: where should you start?
Mat Pilates takes place on a mat; Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a moving carriage. That difference alone does not decide your entire outfit. First, ask the studio what clothing and socks it requests for your class.
Then try your outfit standing, sitting and lying down, without attempting to recreate a class. The aim is to notice anything that feels uncomfortable against the surface beneath you or when you change position.
Reformer Pilates clothing: four details to check
1. Look for fastenings and details at the back
When lying down, can you feel a zip, clasp or decoration under your back? Check knots and strap adjusters too. A detail you barely notice when standing may feel different in another position. If the studio asks you to avoid certain features, factor that into your choice.
2. Check loose panels, straps and hems
A loose top can still be an option if its panels and straps suit you and meet the class requirements. Raise your arms, then sit down: do you want to tuck the top in, shorten a strap or pull up your bottoms? Compare cuts rather than assuming everything must be very tight.
3. Choose a length that suits you
Full-length and 7/8 leggings end at different points on the leg. Look at the hem sitting and standing, and consider your preferred coverage. The 7/8 or full-length leggings guide helps you compare lengths without relying solely on a design’s name.
4. Check which socks are requested
Some studios request a particular type of sock. Check before packing your bag: a pair sold as sports socks is not necessarily a grip style. A fabric’s matte appearance does not establish its grip either.
On the mat: three fitting checks
1. Try the waistband and seams against the mat
Sitting and then lying down, notice whether the waistband folds over, a seam bothers you or you want to adjust the rise. A cut that feels good standing is worth checking on the mat too.
2. Check your top and sports bra for comfort
Breathe normally and raise your arms. Notice whether the band and straps remain comfortable, whether the top shifts and whether the coverage suits you. Trust what you feel: a stated cut or support level cannot replace trying the garment on.
3. Bring a layer for the time around class
For travelling and waiting, pack a jacket or sweatshirt according to the weather and your comfort. Choose something you can easily remove before starting. Our lightweight jacket or sweatshirt guide sets out useful points for choosing this layer.
Compare pieces without a set uniform
| Piece | Reformer | Mat Pilates |
|---|---|---|
| Leggings | Check the hem length and class requirements | Try the waistband and seams while sitting on the mat |
| Sports bra | Locate adjusters or fastenings at the back | Check the band and straps when lying down |
| Top | Watch loose panels and straps as you raise your arms | Check coverage and how the top shifts when sitting |
| Socks | Ask whether a specific style is required | Check the mat class rule rather than assuming another studio’s applies |
| Accessories | Check guidance on jewellery and dangling details | Notice anything uncomfortable against the mat |
Do you need two different outfits?
Not necessarily. Start with clothes you already own that meet the requirements of both classes. Add something only if you identify a specific need, such as another length or the socks requested.
- Try the pieces together, as well as separately.
- Check that getting dressed and undressed feels straightforward for you.
- Notice what you adjust repeatedly before choosing another cut.

Compare Galaya Paris designs
In the Galaya Paris leggings collection, compare the cut, length and details stated on each product page. Check the fabric composition and care instructions for the individual design, then choose your top according to your preferences and fitting experience.
The designs below are starting points to explore. Their inclusion does not mean your studio requires them or that you need to buy a complete outfit.
