The washing routine that triples the lifespan of your sportswear. Practical tips by Galaya Paris.
Do your leggings lose their shape after 6 months? Do your sports bras still smell even after washing? The problem is almost never the fabric — it's your washing routine. Here are the rules that triple the lifespan of a technical garment.
Why Sportswear Requires Special Care
Technical fibers (polyamide, elastane, polyester) are sensitive to 4 things:
- Heat (washing machine + dryer)
- Fabric softener (clogs the fibers)
- Friction (overloaded machine)
- Sweat left on too long (acidic salts attack the fibers)
Poor treatment on these 4 points = leggings dead in 6 months.
The 5-Step Routine
Step 1 — Immediate Rinse
The game-changer. When you get home from your workout, rinse your clothes with cold water in the bathroom sink. 30 seconds.
- Why: sweat contains salts that, when dry, trap odors and attack elastane.
- If you can't wash immediately, this rinse is enough to neutralize the problem.
- Then let air dry while waiting for machine washing.
Step 2 — Smart Sorting
Wash your sportswear together, not with the rest of your laundry:
- ✅ Wash with other technical fabrics (similar fabrics)
- ❌ Not with towels (lint on fibers)
- ❌ Not with jeans (abrasive friction on fitted items)
- ❌ Not with underwire bras (deformation)
Laundry bag: essential for sports bras and items with decorative details (cross-back straps).
Step 3 — The Machine Wash
Required settings:
- Temperature: 30°C max (40°C already destroys elastane)
- Cycle: delicate or synthetic, not intensive cotton
- Spin: 600-800 rpm max (not 1400)
What to use:
- Mild liquid detergent (powder clogs)
- No fabric softener — NEVER
- Option to add a few tablespoons of baking soda to neutralize stubborn odors
What not to use:
- ❌ Fabric softener (clogs fibers, kills wicking)
- ❌ Bleach (destroys colors and fibers)
- ❌ Harsh stain remover
Step 4 — Drying
The golden rule: air dry, never tumble dry.
- Lay flat or hang on a hanger (no clips that leave marks)
- In the shade (direct sunlight fades colors)
- Not on a radiator (heat is destructive to elastane)
- Avoid direct outdoor sunlight
Typical drying time: 4-6 hours flat in a ventilated room.
Step 5 — Storage
- Fold flat (hangers deform close-fitting items)
- No balling up in the drawer (deep creases can weaken the fabric)
- Space items out in the drawer so they can breathe
- Avoid sealed plastic bags for long-term storage
