The complete guide to the ideal Pilates outfit: leggings, sports bra, accessories. Galaya Paris advice to start with confidence.
You have booked your first Pilates class and, paradoxically, the first question that comes up is not “will I manage?” but “what should I wear?”. Good news: a Pilates outfit follows a few simple rules, and choosing it well radically changes the comfort of your session.
The 3 golden rules of a successful Pilates outfit
1. Close to the body, never loose
Pilates involves inverted positions — legs in the air, bridge, rolling through the spine. A loose T-shirt will inevitably ride up over your face in the middle of a Roll-up. Choose fitted cuts without feeling restricted: the fabric should follow the body, but not compress your breathing.2. A fabric that breathes, and does not slip
100% cotton holds moisture, sticks to the skin and loses its shape with every movement. Modern technical fabrics — recycled polyamide, elastane, microfibers — dry quickly, keep their shape and offer a natural grip on the mat that helps prevent slipping in positions.3. Total freedom for breathing
Pilates relies on lateral breathing — the ribs open to the sides, not the belly. Any piece that compresses the diaphragm — a sports bra that is too tight, a top with an elastic band under the bust — sabotages your session. Test it: raise your arms to the ceiling; if anything bothers you, it is a no.The ideal outfit, piece by piece
The bottom: high-waisted leggings, your best ally
They are the key piece. For Pilates, forget shorts that are too short — you will feel uncomfortable during hip openings — or loose trousers, which will slide around. Leggings tick every box, as long as you choose them well.
✅ What to look for:
- High waist — above the navel — that does not slide down during movement
- Compressive without suffocating: it supports without leaving red marks
- Flat seams on the sides and crotch
- Dark color for the first sessions — you will be less distracted by possible transparency in inverted positions
❌ What to avoid:
- Very thin yoga leggings, transparent when bending
- Loose “pajama-style” trousers, impossible for the instructor to correct properly
- Short, slippery shorts

The top: sports bra + top, the winning combination
The sports bra: for Pilates, a low-impact sport, light to moderate support is enough. Choose a cut that frees the rib cage and diaphragm. Thin-strap styles crossed at the back are perfect, provided they hold well.
The top: optional but recommended for the first class. A fitted tank top or short top will make you feel confident without getting in the way. Avoid very short cuts — crop tops — if you do not feel comfortable, as your back will be very exposed during mat work.

Often-forgotten accessories
Grip socks: most studios work barefoot or with grip socks, never in sneakers. Socks with grips (€5-15) are essential on the Reformer for safety.
Hair tied back: low ponytail or bun, so it does not bother you in inverted positions.
No jewelry: it can catch on Reformer straps and scratch your skin on the floor.
Our complete checklist before you leave
Before heading to the studio, check that you have:
☐ Fitted high-waisted leggings☐ Light-support sports bra☐ Fitted top, optional☐ Grip socks☐ Water bottle☐ Small towel, for sweat☐ Hair tied back☐ No jewelryAnd after class?
Small secret: change after your session. Pilates clothes absorb sweat, and staying in them in the car afterward can feel uncomfortable. Bring a warm, comfortable outfit for the way back.
The “I’ll buy everything tomorrow” trap
A classic temptation: making a big investment before the first class. Bad idea. Do your first session with the best pieces you already have in your wardrobe — slightly snug leggings + a fitted top — then invest afterwards, once you know exactly what you are missing.
Our advice: 2 complete sets are more than enough to start — you wash one while wearing the other.
