Brassière de yoga : maintien doux ou fort, comment choisir ?

Yoga bra: soft or strong support, how to choose?

Everything you need to choose the ideal yoga sports bra according to your bust and your practice. A Galaya Paris guide to support, cuts and fabrics.

Choosing a yoga sports bra seems easier than choosing a running bra. It is not. Yoga combines inverted positions, twists, moments of deep breathing and static phases — each one creates a different requirement. Here is how to choose the right sports bra for your practice.

Understanding support levels

All sports bras are classified according to three impact levels:

Level Relevant sports For yoga
Light Gentle yoga, Pilates, walking Hatha, Yin, Restorative
Medium Vinyasa, dance, cycling Most dynamic yoga styles
High Running, HIIT, team sports ❌ Not suitable for yoga
Golden rule: for yoga, aim for light to medium support, never high.

Why not high? Because high-impact sports bras compress the bust and diaphragm — incompatible with yogic breathing such as Ujjayi or Kapalabhati, which requires a mobile chest.

The bust criterion: choosing correctly

Cup size Recommended yoga support
AA - B Light support for every type of yoga
C - D Light support for yin, medium support for Vinyasa
E+ Medium support for all yoga styles, or even two layered sports bras
For E cups and above, also look for:
  • Wide straps, at least 3 cm
  • Reinforced under-bust band, without feeling suffocating
  • Separated cups or a seam under each breast for independent support

The ideal cuts for yoga

Thin straps & racerback

  • ✅ Ideal for AA-C cups
  • ✅ Total freedom during twists
  • ❌ Limited support

Crossed straps, criss-cross

  • ✅ Strong aesthetic
  • ✅ Prevents straps from falling down
  • ⚠️ Can rub during inversions

Longline sports bra

  • ✅ “Top” effect without needing to add another layer
  • ✅ Reinforced support without extra compression
  • Our Galaya favorite for yoga

Closed racerback bralette

  • ✅ Optimal support
  • ❌ Harder to put on and take off

Mistakes to avoid

1. A sports bra with too much cleavage

In cobra or downward dog, a neckline that is too low becomes a problem. Choose cuts that cover at least the beginning of the breast.

2. A sports bra with metal pieces

Sports bras with clips, hooks or metal rings become unbearable in savasana, when lying on your back. Prefer pull-on cuts.

3. Straps that are too thin

During a 90-minute yoga class, 1 cm straps leave red marks on the shoulders. Aim for 2-3 cm minimum.

4. A sports bra that marks the rib cage

If after 5 minutes of wear you see a red mark under the bust → it is too tight, and your breathing is compromised.

How to test in store or at home

Before buying, or before keeping a sports bra ordered online:

  1. Breathing test: raise your arms to the ceiling and take 3 deep lateral breaths. Any restriction?
  2. Inversion test: bend forward with your head down, like downward dog. Does the fabric stay in place? Is the bust supported without pain?
  3. Twist test: place your hands on the opposite shoulders. Do the straps slip?
  4. 30-minute comfort test: wear the sports bra for 30 minutes while watching a film. At the end, no red marks?

If it passes all 4 tests, you have found your sports bra.

The ideal composition

Component Ideal % Why
Polyamide / Nylon 70-80% Dries quickly, keeps its shape
Elastane / Spandex 15-25% Support and shape recovery
Elastic in the band under the bust Support without hard compression
Avoid sports bras containing more than 20% cotton, as they lose their shape quickly, or shiny components that create a slippery effect.

How many sports bras should you own?

For regular practice, 2-3 times per week, 3 sports bras are enough:

  • 2 medium-support bras for Vinyasa, active Hatha and Pilates
  • 1 light-support bra for Yin, Restorative and home sessions

The initial investment pays off: a good sports bra lasts 2 to 3 years if washed correctly, cold wash and air dry.
