Le guide ultime de la tenue de yoga femme

The ultimate guide to women's yoga wear

Everything you need to create the ideal women’s yoga outfit: leggings, sports bra, top, by yoga style. Complete Galaya Paris guide.

Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, yin, hot yoga, restorative… The diversity of yoga makes choosing an outfit more subtle than it seems. Here is the complete guide to creating an outfit that supports you, whatever your practice.

What defines a good yoga outfit

Four criteria apply to every practice:

  1. Total freedom of movement: no piece should interfere with a forward fold, twist or inversion
  2. Free breathing: neither the sports bra nor the legging waistband should compress the diaphragm
  3. Breathable fabrics: technical fabrics that wick away moisture and dry quickly
  4. An outfit that stays in place: no top falling over your head in an inversion, no leggings sliding down

The essential pieces

Yoga leggings: length and cut depending on your practice

This is the key piece. Three main criteria:

Waist height:

  • Gentle / restorative yoga: mid-rise is fine
  • Vinyasa, active Hatha, Ashtanga: high waist is essential
  • Inversions, aerial yoga, sirsasana: extra-high waist to keep the fabric in place

Length:

  • Full length at the ankle: understated style, ideal in air-conditioned studios
  • 7/8: the most versatile, shows the ankle
  • Capri at the knee: for hot yoga
  • Shorts: restorative practice at home or Bikram

Compression:

  • Slow yoga, Hatha, yin: light compression, comfort focused
  • Dynamic yoga, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Power: moderate compression for support

→ See all Galaya leggings.

The yoga sports bra: intelligent support

Yoga is a low to medium impact sport. There is no need to choose a running bra. However, you want:

  • Light to moderate support depending on your bust and your practice
  • No metal parts such as clips or hooks that can bother you in savasana
  • Thin or crossed straps that do not slip from the shoulders during twists
  • A wide but flexible under-bust band

→ See our sports bra collection.

The top: when should you add one?

Essential:

  • In group classes if you prefer more coverage
  • In a cool studio
  • For inversions, as the top keeps the stomach covered when you are upside down

Optional:

  • Hot yoga, because you will regret the top after 10 minutes
  • Solo practice at home

Choose a fitted mid-length tank top or a crop top that you can tuck into the waistband.

The ideal outfit by yoga style

Vinyasa & Hatha

The most common practices. A versatile outfit:
  • High-waisted 7/8 or full-length leggings
  • Moderate-support sports bra
  • Fitted tank top
  • No socks, except when arriving

Ashtanga & Power Yoga

Very dynamic, with guaranteed sweat:
  • High-waisted compressive leggings
  • Moderate-to-strong support sports bra
  • Very breathable fitted top
  • Personal towel essential

Hot Yoga / Bikram

Moisture management comes first:
  • Shorts or capri leggings
  • Sports bra without a top
  • The most technical fabric possible
  • A large towel for the mat

Yin Yoga & Restorative

Gentle practice, comfort first:
  • Comfortable leggings, not necessarily compressive
  • Long top or light sweater for the end of class, when the body cools down
  • Soft socks for arrival

Aerial yoga

Specific requirements:
  • Long top or long-sleeve legging/top coverage required, because the hammock fabric rubs the armpits
  • No zips, no buttons, for hammock safety

Fabrics: what you need to know

What to choose

  • Polyamide / Nylon: durable, dries quickly, keeps its shape
  • Elastane / Spandex, 20-30%: stretch and shape recovery
  • Technical microfibers: soft and breathable finish
  • Modal or Tencel: for tops, with a silky touch

What to avoid for dynamic yoga

  • 100% cotton: holds moisture, becomes heavy, loses its shape
  • Pure polyester without elastane: does not recover its shape

What to avoid in every case

  • Very shiny or satin-like fabrics, slippery on the mat
  • Very thin “sport-shaper” fabrics, transparent in forward folds

Colors and style: Galaya advice

Yoga is also an aesthetic practice. A few principles:

Colors that always flatter

  • Deep black: iconic, enhances the cuts
  • Beige / camel: modern, soft on the eye
  • Navy ink: a chic alternative to black
  • Terracotta / brick: modern and feminine
  • Olive / sage: natural, connected to the practice

Winning combinations

  • Monochrome, leggings + sports bra in the same color → sculpting effect
  • Subtle color block, two tones from the same family
  • Total beige with wooden accessories for a premium studio look

What to avoid

  • Overloaded prints, distracting in savasana
  • Neon, incompatible with the spirit of yoga

Accessories: minimalism

Essential:

  • Personal mat, 5 mm minimum, non-slip
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Hair tie

Useful depending on the practice:

  • Yoga block, Hatha, Iyengar
  • Strap, yin, beginners
  • Non-slip towel, hot yoga

Unnecessary:

  • Jewelry
  • Heavy makeup, especially for savasana
  • Perfume, in shared spaces

Our checklist: before leaving for the studio
